Skin Care Clean-Up Activity

Objective

To make sure you are not using harmful ingredients on your skin. The
skin is the largest organ in the body, and it is working double-time to protect us from the external AND internal environment. Therefore, what we put on our skin matters!

As we age, our skin becomes thinner and more sensitive so taking extra care is a great investment in your health. Unfortunately, there are so many products, claims and questionable research out there, it can easily get overwhelming to investigate. Luckily, there is a trusted, research-based non-profit company that takes all the work out for the consumer who wishes to transition into a healthier life. The company is called the Environmental Working Group and you can visit their website here: ewg.org.

Materials Needed

Gather the skincare products that you use regularly along with your computer, phone, or iPad.

Activity

Collect and organize your current skincare items; anything from your makeup, hair products, lotions, fragrances, etc. Look at the ingredients of each item and discern if there are any dangerous chemicals according to standards listed by the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep database by clicking here. You will find a list of safe products for your skin. To view a particular category, use the tabs along the top labeled “Sun, Skin, Hair, etc.,” or you can type in your brand to see how it rates.

Then, consider a plan to replace your chemical-based products with a more natural brand. Go at your own pace. A good rule of thumb is to replace a product as you run out of what you have been using. However, if you are ready for a clean slate, go for it!

**Don’t forget, you will be benefiting your skin every time you make healthy food choices, too!
